Amid all the uncertainty we’ve all been experiencing lately, business owners everywhere are met with the new challenge of managing their remote employees. Do you know how to ensure they’re still successful and productive even while working from home?

Below you’ll find our top tips for managing your remote employees’ performance:

SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS

Make sure your employees know what is expected of them while working from home. Do you expect them to work the same hours they worked while in the office? Do you require more meetings or conversations? Are you planning more regular check-ins?

Whatever you and your team decides on, ensure your employees all know what’s expected of them.

CREATE AND ESTABLISH SET SCHEDULES AND CHECK-INS

Similar to the point above, it’s important to set schedules and regular check-ins with your employees. Establish a remote routine so your employees know what to expect and can create their own personal routines. Check in with them regularly to find any opportunities for improvement.

NEVER CANCEL A ONE-ON-ONE

Your employees need you right now. They need your leadership and your guidance, so make sure you’re available for them. If you schedule a one-on-one, do not cancel it. These check-ins should be a priority.

PROVIDE SEVERAL COMMUNICATION OPTIONS

Give your employees plenty of ways to engage, reach out, and feel connected. These options may include messaging tools, video conferencing, open meeting times, virtual happy hours, virtual team lunches, and more. Be available and give your employees plenty of options to connect with each other.

FOCUS ON A GOALS-APPROACH TO YOUR TEAM AND THEIR WORK

Especially during uncertainty, it’s vital to set goals. Set goals for your company, your team, and your individual employees. These goals will help give your team something to work toward when it is tough to see the end of this new reality of working from home.

DO NOT CHANGE PIPS (PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT PLANS)

Do not allow a pandemic or uncertain times to change the way you hold your employees accountable. Continue to help your employees improve and get closer to reaching goals set before the pandemic.
